Voluntary Sector
Other Experience Sections refer to a number of charities I have
advised: see Investment Property, Planning and Related Work, and
Hotels and Leisure Property. I have particular experience of acting
for voluntary sector bodies, especially in advising on development
agreements and leases affecting their land and on disposals. Advising
charities in connection with disposals involves a detailed knowledge
of charity legislation and of the drafting and negotiation of overage
arrangements to protect the trustees (a subject on which I have
written in the charity press). Acting for the City Parochial Foundation
in particular has, I believe, given me a good insight into the workings
of the voluntary sector generally and an ability to understand its
needs and to advise charity trustees. I have served as a trustee
and director of a national charity (Contact A Family) and I have
been nominated as the next Chairman of the Covent Garden Area Trust.
Example:
Advising the City Parochial Foundation in connection with the establishment
of the London Voluntary Sector Resource Centre in London's Holloway
Road. This was a unique joint venture between the City Parochial
Foundation and another charity for the creation of a Centre to provide
office and other facilities for London-based charities. The site
was formerly the Jones Brothers department store owned by John Lewis
Partnership and the project involved the division of the site and
the refurbishment of the major part of the building (with the remainder
of the site becoming a Waitrose supermarket). The project has been
extremely successful and I continued to advise whenever required.
